Evaluation of voice rehabilitation effectiveness after implantation of Provox 2 voice prosthesis in laryngectomised patients
Jarosław Markowski, Agnieszka Piotrowska-Seweryn, Małgorzata Witkowska, Piotr Wardas, Jarosław Paluch, Jan Pilch,Wirginia Likus

Introduction. Voice rehabilitation after total laryngectomy
plays a crucial role in restoring patient’s normal social life and
constitutes the fundamental objective of the post-operative
treatment.
Aim. An objective and subjective voice analysis as well as
patients’ evaluation of the voice rehabilitation effectiveness after
implantation of Provox 2 voice prosthesis.
Materials and methods. Study subjects comprised 26 patients
with Provox 2 voice prosthesis. The control group consisted of
16 patients with esophageal speech developed within 2-5 years
since the total laryngectomy. Objective and subjective phoniatric
examinations as well as the assessment of voice handicap index
were performed in both groups. The effectiveness of voice
rehabilitation was evaluated using Harrison-Robilliard-Shultz
scale (HRS).
Results. Voice rehabilitation with the application of Provox 2
voice prosthesis has been found highly effective, as almost 80%
of the studied patients assessed it as successful (more than 10
points in HRS scale).
Conclusions. Voice rehabilitation was better in patients
with Provox 2 voice prosthesis than in those with esophageal
speech.
