Opportunities for objectification of phoniatric examination in speech disorders
Bożena Wiskirska-Woźnica

Loud speech as the main means of communication, exchange
of information and ideas plays an essential role in the process
of communication. To increase the objectivity of evaluation
of the organ of speech, in addition to detailed history-taking,
complete phoniatric assessment is necessary. The latter one can
be divided into basic and supplementary examination. Methods
facilitating objective basic examination in speech disorders include
rhinospirometry, nazometry, which enable automatically
determine the nasality of speech sounds, palatography involving
the recording of the traces left on the palate by the tongue during
the articulation of individual sounds, as well as the more recent
electropalatography. Radiological examination of the peripheral
organ of speech allows the assessment of language position and
behavior of the soft palate during the articulation, while the
less invasive ultrasound examination facilitates visualization of
the outline of the tongue and its muscular structure at rest and
during movement. Also electromyography makes it possible to
assess objectively the functional state of the peripheral organ
of speech and permits to distinguish between the neurogenic/
paralytic lesions and the myogenic changes.
