Risk factors of tinnitus among 7 year old children
Danuta Raj-Koziak, Henryk Skarżyński, Krzysztof Kochanek, Anna Fabijańska

Introduction. Risk factors indicate the possibility of a specific
event, which for the tinnitus means the likelihood of its
occurence. The main focus of modern medicine is to prevent
diseases, hence it is essential to assess tinnitus risk factors, as
their identification enables assessment of the related etiological
factors.
Aim. The objective of this study was to estimate risk factors
for development of children’s tinnitus, such as: sex, hearing
impairment, ear infections, noise exposure from listening to
loud music.
Material and methods. Material of the study included responses
of 118 005 parents of 7-year-old children, collected during
the implementation of the 2008-2010 nationwide project of
screening tests intended to assess hearing function among 7
year-old children. The research strategy included assessment
of the risk of tinnitus based on the value of odds ratio (OR) for
different groups of the children: boys vs. girls, children with positive
vs. negative history of otitis, and with normal vs. abnormal
result of the hearing screening test. Risk of tinnitus was also
compared between the children with, and without a history of
noise exposure from listening to loud music.
Results. Hearing impairment, history of ear infections and noise
exposure through listening to loud music have been proved to
be the risk factors of tinnitus in 7-year children.
Conclusions. Identification of the risk factors for tinnitus seems
to represent a valuable guideline for the development of proce dures
for early and primary prevention of tinnitus in children.
