Diagnostics and treatment of neck cysts

Introduction. Laterocervical (branchial) and midline (thyroglossal
duct) cysts are the most common congenital malformations
of the neck.
Aim. The aim of this study was to discuss the etiopathogenesis
of the disease and to present the diagnostic and therapeutic
procedures based on the results of treatment in patients with
neck cysts.
Material and methods. Case histories of 61 neck cyst patients
treated in the Clinic of Otolaryngology and Laryngological Oncology,
Collegium Medicum, Nicolaus Copernicus University in
Bydgoszcz between 1999 and 2009 were analysed.
Results. Recurrence of the disease occurred in one patient,
i.e. the recurrence index was 1.6%.
Conclusions. Proper diagnosis and treatment of neck cysts guarantee
the therapeutic success and low index of recurrence.
