Franciszek Ksawery Jawdyński (1851-1896) – the first Polish head and neck surgeon
Andrzej Kierzek, Stanisław Bień

The brief curriculum, professional and scientific achievements
of Franciszek Ksawery Jawdyński (1851-1896) are presented in
more details. Jawdyński, whose name is associated with the first
successfully performed radical dissection of primary neck cancer,
including removal of the common and external carotid arteries
and a fragment of sterno-cleido-mastoid muscle, is presented as
a brilliant, experienced diagnostician and a very versatile, innovative,
deft surgeon, especially in the field of head and neck surgery.
Jawdyński, born and all his life living in Warsaw, was trained at
the Surgical Clinic of the Imperial Warsaw University, working
later as a surgeon at the Praga Hospital in Warsaw and at the
surgical department of the Infant Jesus Hospital in Warsaw. In
his short surgical career, which dramatically ended up due to
infection after he had cut his finger during operation, Jawdyński
is shown as a passionate teacher of surgery for numerous prominent
Warsaw surgeons as Roman Jasiński, Andrzej Ciechomski,
Antoni Leśniowski and others. He was also active in medical
associations and as a co-editor of the medical periodicals. The
paper presents dr F. Jawdyński, as the most prominent initiator
of head and neck surgery in Poland.
