Leiomyomas of the head and neck

Leiomyomas are mesenchymal tumours showing smooth
muscle differentiation. They develop most often in the uterus,
sometimes in the gastrointestinal tract and skin and only 1% of
these tumours occur in the head and neck region. The tumours
are benign. They are diagnosed by histological examination,
while some vague cases may require immunohistochemical
Four cases of histology-proven leiomyomas are reported. Two
of the patients tumours located in the tongue and in the throat
just below the lower sphincter presented with epithelioid type
of tumour which is extremely rare in the organs of head and
neck. The tumour of the lower lip and the neck tumour located
below the inferior border of the mandibular angle detected
in the other two patirnts were of the vascular type. Clinical
symptoms, histological characteristics, differential diagnosis and
the treatment of that type of neoplasms have been reported.
