Is higher concentration of total serum IgE in patients with coronary heart disease associated with underlying allergy?

Introduction. Patients with accute ischaemic heart disease (IHD) present increased total serum levels of immunoglobulin E (IgE). However, it is not clear if higher IgE level is related to underlying allergy in individuals with IHD.
Aim of study. The aim of study was to determine the total IgE concentration in serum in patients with IHD.
Material and methods. The study included 195 patients (age 35-70 years) with IHD and negative personal and familial allergic history. The patients suffered from myocardial infarction (n=80), unstable angina pectoris (n=58) or stable angina pectoris (n=57). Control group comprised 39 healthy subjects. In all patients intradermal tests with allergens were performed and total serum IgE levels were estimated. In patients with positive skin tests, serum levels of specific IgE were determined (Unicap).
Results. Mean concentration of the IgE in patients with IHD was significantly higher comparing to control group (p<0.05). Only few positive results of skin tests were noted in IHD group. The presence of IgE specific to cigarette tobacco was found only in 2 persons with IHD.
Conclusion. Results of our study indicate that higher concentration of IgE in patients with IHD is not related to underlying allergy.
