Allergic status and general health status of children involved in a Program for Asthma and Allergic Disease Prevention were evaluated.
170 children referred by GPs, aged 2-16 years, were evaluated. History, pediatric and ORL examination, prick-tests with inhalations and food allergens and total IgE plasma concentration were performed in all children. Spirometry or rhinomanometry tests were done in some cases. In few patients plasma concentrations of immunoglobulins IgA, IgM, IgG were determined.
On the basis of clinical examination and positive skin tests, allergy was diagnosed in 56 children (33%): 37 had seasonal rhinitis, 42 perenial rhinitis, 8 bronchial asthma. High IgE plasma concentration was found in 17 (10%) children without clinical data of allergy and with negative skin tests. In 98 children (53%) referred by GPs to Laryngological Department, various laryngological diseases as: chronic tonsillitis, chronic rhinitis, nasal septum deviation, were diagnosed. Only in 30 children (18%) specialist care was not necessary and they were sent back to GPs.
