Allergy to surgical gloves
Edward Rudzki, Krystyna Parapura

Recently, the increased prevalence of hypersensitivity to surgical gloves has been recognized. This phenomenon appeared in Poland later than in other developed countries. Two mechanisms are thought to be involved. Accelerators - simple compounds, which provoke the delayed type hypersensitivity reaction with a clinical picture of dermatitis. On the other hand, latex proteins elicit an immediate hypersensitivity reaction, commonly contact urticaria and less often protein contact dermatitis.
In addition, latex proteins are common aeroallergens, which induce rhinitis, conjunctivitis and less frequently asthma and other atopic diseases. The paper discusses latex allergens found in surgical gloves, factors which facilitate their air spreading and some aspects of "fruit-latex syndrome".
