The effectivenes of mattres covers in reducing exposure to house dust mite and symptoms of house dust mite allergy has been esthablished in several clinical trials. The goal of the study was to employ a new laboratory method for testing fabrics for mattres covers. We used original methods developed in our laboratory, which allows for measurement permeability to house dust particles and to Der p I antigen assayed by specific enzym- link immunoassay. With this method 50 fabrics, manufactured according to various technologies were tested. We were able to chose a single fabric which demonstrated permeability to house dust and Der p I antigen below 1% of reference cotton fabric. This fabric is being tested in a clinical trial of mattres covers effectiveness against HDM allergy.
