Asthma in the elderly
Aleksandra Wardzyńska, Marek L. Kowalski

Summary
Asthma is a common health problem affecting older patients. According
to existing data asthma in the elderly is associated with a higher mortality
rate and frequent exacerbations which may be the result of under-treatment
and incorrect diagnosis. Aged asthmatics are a special group because
of the coexistence of many chronic diseases, polytherapy and the
influence of the physiological process of aging. Cognitive impairment,
comorbidities and appropriate education should be taken into account
in the management of asthma in older patients.
