GERD is a condition in which the pathological regurgitation of gastric
contents into the esophagus causes troublesome symptoms or complications.
According to the recent classification of Montreal, in addition to
the GERD esophageal syndromes, also other extraesophageal syndromes
are distinguished, such as e.g., the reflux cough, laryngopharyngeal reflux,
and asthmatic reflux syndromes which, according to the above classification,
are syndromes with a proven relationship, but their origin and
effects of treatment with anti-reflux drugs give rise to much controversy.
