Pharmacoeconomics of Pediatric Asthma – The Major Methodological Problems
Anna Bodajko-Grochowska, Andrzej Emeryk

Asthma is amongst the most common chronic diseases in the world. It
affects mainly children and young adults, and significantly limits their
daily functioning and results in a number of social and economic consequences.
The economic crisis and the need to rationalize health care
spending has contributed to the development of modern branch of science
known as pharmacoeconomics. Contemporary health policies of
most countries are based on the results of pharmacoeconomic analyses,
which in a clear and precise way allow to select the most efficient and
cost-effective method of treatment of a given disease. Analyses carried
out in accordance with current guidelines are particularly helpful in assessing
the costs of treating chronic diseases, including asthma. However,
conducting proper analysis does not always mean that their results are
reliable. The aim of this paper is to present the main methodological
problems in pharmacoeconomic studies of pediatric asthma.
