Immunomodulatory activities and the use of immunoglobulins
Sławomir Tokarski, Marek L. Kowalski

Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) preparations have been in use in
clinical practice for many years. Initially they were used in replacement
therapy in cases of immunodeficiency. The discovery of a significant and
dose-dependent immuomodulative IVIg effect resulted in their use in
treatment of inflammatory disorders. The mechanism of immunosuppressive
effects of large doses is not fully understood and is dependent
upon numerous mutually non-excluding phenomena. Due to multi-directional
influence on the functioning of immune system, IVIg have been
used in various areas of medicine
