What is severe/difficult asthma – definitions

Asthma is a heterogeneous inflammatory disorder of the conducting airways. Owing to modern treatment methods, most of the asthmatic patients achieves the desirable level of disease control. However, there is a group of ca. 5% to 10% of patients with asthma who do not respond to the standard GINA treatment. The aim of this article is to present the current knowledge concerning the problem of identification of subjects with severe and symptomatic asthma persisting despite appropriate treatment.
