Atopic dermatitis (AD) is highly prevalent, chronic inflammatory skin
disease having characteristic clinical picture with persistent pruritus as
leading symptom. In addition to immunological and genetic factors AD,
skin barrier dysfunction has been implicated in the pathogenesis of AD.
More recently a new treatment approach called “proactive therapy” has
emerged. The new concept is based on chronic application of topical
anti-inflammatory agents, calcineurin inhibitors, which suppress subclinical
inflammation which is present even during clinical the remission of
the disease. Such approach results in more effective treatment of AD.
