100 years of allergen immunotherapy (ITA) – pioneers and classicists
Jerzy Kruszewski

The year 2011 marks exactly 100 years since two articles by Noon,
Freeman and Cantab, fundamental for allergen immunotherapy, were
published in The Lancet. It is difficult to decide which of them was
more important, because they complemented each other. Most authors
writing about the beginnings of the allergen immunotherapy cite
only Freeman and Noon, though. It is worth mentioning there had also
been earlier attempts of desensitization, undertaken by Wiliam Philipps
Dunbar, Charles Blackley, H. Holbrook Curtis, Aleksandr Besredka
and others, and the method invented in 1911 has been improved ever
since. Its anniversary was celebrated at this year’s congress of the American
Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology, in San Francisco,
and during the Congress of the European Academy of Allergology and
Clinical Immunology in Istanbul.
