Antimicrobial peptides – an important element of natural immunity
Paulina Niedźwiedzka-Rystwej, Agata Mękal, Wiesław Deptuła

Antimicrobial peptides (HDP) are one of the main elements of natural
immunity. Those substances show a wide spectrum of activity against
Gram positive and negative bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. The
synthesis of HDP is based on the impact of lipopolysaccharide (LPS),
and IL-1β and TNF-α. The authors decribe three main groups of antimicrobial
peptides – digestive enzymes targeting microbial structures,
peptides that bind essential elements, and peptides that disrupt the
microbial membrane. Their place of occurrence and synthesis together
with biological activity are described.
