Exhaled nitric oxide measurements in the diagnosis of respiratory diseases

The measurement of nitric oxide is a simple and noninvasive diagnostic
test. In patients with asthma the increase in concentration of
exhaled nitric oxide (FENO) has been demonstrated. In these patients
FENO correlates well with other inflammatory process indicators
related to eosinophilic infiltration; it is a sensitive index to
inflammatory process, quickly responding to treatment or
exacerbation of a disease. It should be emphasized that FENO is particularly
useful in monitoring the therapy with the use of inhaled corticosteroids.
The increased concentration of of FENO in patients with allergic rhinitis
might be associated with the higher risk of asthma.
The elevated values of FENO in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease may indicate coexisting asthma. The measurement of
exhaled nitric oxide should be used more extensively in diagnostics
and monitoring of treatment of patients who suffer from respiratory
diseases, especially those with asthma.
