Allergic rhinitis is a global health problem affecting patients from all countries, all ethnic groups and at any age. Allergic rhinitis is a major cause of morbidity and disability in Poland, especially in children and adolescents. The ARIA (Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma) document was published in 2001, setting new standards for the diagnosis and management of allergic rhinitis and stressing the importance of interplay between the upper and lower airways. The ARIA 2008 update has been recently published. In this article we review new elements of ARIA 2008 and discuss its potential significance. It seems to be of importance that the 2008 ARIA document is available also to Polish physicians providing a source of information for better care of patients with allergic airway diseases.
