The prevalence of side effects, hypersensitivity and allergy to individual ingredients of cosmetics, chrome and nickel among the students of cosmetology

Introduction. Cosmetics are the substances commonly used in the contemporary society, however, they develop side effects, reactions of hypersensitivity and even allergy. Beauticians are people who contact with cosmetics particularly often and they are exposed to undesirable effects of cosmetics more often than others.
Aim of the study. The aim of the study was to describe the frequency of side effects appearance, reactions of hypersensitivity and allergy to the individual ingredients and metals such as chrome and nickel among the students of cosmetology faculty in Collegium Medicum in Bydgoszcz of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.
Material and methods. In the study take a part 149 students of cosmetology, who fulfilled the questionnaire concerning the appearance of side effects after using the cosmetics. Among the people who noticed such effects, another tests were carried out. Those skins tests dealt with the chosen ingredients which cause the allergy and there were: an aromatic cocktail A, aromatic cocktail P, Balsam of Peru, mertiolat, parabens, formalin, carnation oil, paraphenylenediamine, nickel and chrome.
Results. The frequency of side effects after the use of cosmetics was 28,8%. The effects of hypersensitivity were noticed among 16,1%, while an allergy among 2,1% of the tested people.
Conclusions. The prevalence of side effects after using cosmetics was similar than general population, and in most cases were not allergy reaction
